Biomedical Services - Servicing Technology for Life

Rather than rely on the manufacturer, BAMC uses its own Biomedical Services department to maintain its medical and patient care equipment. There are three biomedical technicians at BAMC that are responsible for servicing 200-300 different types of equipment.

Biomedical technicians service equipment such as ECG monitors, blood pressure monitors, telemetry systems, infusion pumps, ventilators, defibrillators, pulse oximetry, EEG and dialysis equipment. In addition to BAMC, they also service NorthReach and have contracts with rescue squad units from the surrounding area as well.

Biomedical equipment technicians (BMETs) are a vital component of the healthcare delivery system. While a good portion of the time can be spent on scheduled or preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance, they can do much more. In addition to their “fix-it” skills, technicians can assist with pre-purchase evaluations, installations, user training, preventive maintenance, equipment upgrades, asset management, sourcing parts from alternate vendors, incident investigations, etc.

In order to become a BMET it takes a special person; someone that enjoys technical challenges and is capable of communicating well with other healthcare disciplines. It requires training in electronics and life sciences, and a continued focus on learning new technology and equipment.
