| Now there is new help in making your bones last as long as you do. A bone densitometry unit, used to detect osteoporosis, is situated in the Women's Health Center at BAMC; the DPX-IQ bone densitometer measures the density of the spine, hip and other bones that are the most frequent sites of fracture. Twenty five million Americans have osteoporosis, and 50,000 die each year because of it. Osteoporosis affects nearly one-half of all post-menopausal women, the largest group at high risk for osteoporosis. After the screening, your doctor can help plan a prevention and treatment plan to slow or minimize the gradual bone loss that is characteristic of osteoporosis. Resource library. A series of tapes, pamphlets and other health and wellness resources is available at the BAMC Women's Health Center. The reference room also is equipped with a VCR and lounge chairs, so you can watch health-related videos or read in comfort while you wait for an appointment.
